What’s a Tween?
Tweens are an interesting blend of the kids we used to know and the teens they are becoming – typically, they’re between the ages of 11 and 14 years old. They are seeking ways to be more independent but parents aren’t quite ready to give them full reign over their time and activities. Here’s where the Library comes in!
What the Library Offers Tweens
Because we know it is difficult to dance between being a kid and being a teenager, we came up with a few ways we can provide space for tweens to just be who they are at this time. We created a Tween Collection of books that have more complex story lines, and more challenging language or topics that are generally of interest to or more age-appropriate for tweens. This collection is in its own section of the Library, giving tweens a greater sense of independence.
We mindfully selected a variety of digital resources, games, puzzles and kits that tweens take home, or use with friends in the Library. We also created Tween Scene, a space and time set aside each week for kids to snack, chat, play games or make something fun. It’s an opportunity for kids to have some independence in a safe environment that parents can trust. Tweens are encouraged to just drop in after school any Thursday afternoon at 3:00!
Why We Do It
Tweens are terrific! They have great ideas to share, big imaginations and a fun sense of humour. And, we offer these opportunities because we care about this age group. Tweens are unique in their needs and we want them to be thriving individuals in our community. There’s a lot going on at this stage for both parents and kids and we are here for you!
